"Session 1: Accelerating Sustainable Construction practices
Mr. Filipe Borges de Macedo (architect, Portugal) reflected on the past work of TG3 related to the EU Construction and Demolition Waste Protocol 3 and in particular the Roadshows organised in six European capitals, including the one in Lisbon.
Mr. Borges de Macedo highlighted that the problem regarding durability and adaptability consideration in construction is found mostly on small scale building sites, where most of the waste is not well managed. The political response needs to be pragmatic and focused
on communication. Firstly, the project process needs to improve regarding the re-usage of buildings and materials. This can be achieved by sharing best practices, also using new means of communications (e.g. Youtube tutorials), taking each client’s individual situation into account. Secondly, best practices should be sponsored.
Thirdly, "low" demolition and renovation should be promoted as a life style for the general public and as an economic advantage for the investor as they can be much cheaper than "heavy" demolition, He concluded by emphasising on the need to better promote reuse as an important tool to keep the European architectural heritage alive.
Mr. Borges de Macedo warned not to follow a one-size-fits-all approach and to account for differences among MS and different geological/climate regions.
He also noted that local craftsmanship is necessary and useful in promoting and sustaining local identity and culture, thus requiring skills. "
